Comparison: The distorting mirror

Ever been to fair and gone into the rooms with all the mirrors- the ones that make you any number of things- skinny, fat, tall, short, misshapen, wide faced. Everyone comes out laughing hysterically- why? Because it’s outlandish, because we know it isn’t true. What happens though, when we don’t know what the object really looks like? When the reflected image becomes our only truth?

That’s what comparison is like- it shows us an unreal reflection with no concept of the actual object. The object could be anything- our body image, our relationships, our partner, our families, our friends, our house (I can go on and on but you get the picture right?)

When it comes to us I am a big believer that most of our healing is about internal soul work. It is us not just coming to terms with who we are but getting to a place of celebrating who we are. Understanding that reality, opens up a world of opportunities both for us and for those around us.

When it comes to the other Think of social media for a moment, we see the highlights, not the everyday ordinary routines (Confession though, sometimes I do end up posting about my epic lunches). With success stories, we rarely see what it took for someone to get to that place.

Ever heard the phrase “The grass is greener on the other side”? Not too long ago I was sitting in a room and someone said “the grass is greener where you water it”. Now that’s a real game changer if we are willing to apply it, isn’t it?

What Can I do now? Here are some practical ideas- try or tweak or create your own

- Write out 3 of your strengths every day, for a weeks and celebrate it.

- Start a gratitude journal

- Pick one area in your life that you can water and see it slowly flourish
